Thusday 16th April 2020

Good morning Year 3,

Thank you for all your comments regarding my daughter's 5 month birthday celebration. Also, I really enjoyed your answers to my random question. Idriss thinks the chicken came first as an egg needs a mum!

Yesterday the McKenzie family spent the day talking to family and friends by video chat. I talked to my uncle in New York and my Nan in South London. Are you talking to friends and family using video chats?

Yesterday we dressed Nabeelah in her Wonder Woman outfit, because... why not?!? 😆

I hope you have all had a chance to look at the tasks set on Purple Mash and have been improving your times tables skills on Times Tables Rock Stars. I will be checking your progress at the end of this week.

Today's random question is...

What colour is the sky? And why is it that colour?

There is a scientific answer to this. Can you research and find out what it is?

Ciao for now!
Mr McKenzie

  1. blue. A clear cloudless day time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sunset we see red and orange because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

  2. The colour of the sky is blue because blue light is scattered more than the other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.

  3. Hi Mr McKenzie My mum has been teaching me about the water cycle before we saw this questionMy mum said great minds think alike because we was both talking about the sky.

I’m not too sure about it but I think it has something to do with reflections from the sun.

    1. Your mum sounds like a great teacher Navaya! It is amazing to look up at the sky on a blue-sky day and think about how small we are and how big the sky is. Well done for having a think about why it is blue - it's a tricky question - Have a look at some of your classmates answers. Miss Rader

  4. Hi,
The sky looks blue a lot of the time because sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by all the gases and particles in the air. Blue light is scattered more than the other colours because it travels as shorter, smaller waves.

During a sunset the sky looks red, this is because as the Sun gets lower in the sky, its light passes through more of the atmosphere to reach us. Even more of the blue light is scattered, allowing the reds and yellows to pass straight through to our eyes.

    1. Wow Freya! That is an extremely detailed response and I love all the scientific words you have used there. This research will be really helpful when you are learning about space in Year 5. Well done, from Miss Rader

  5. This is trikey, I think it's because the light of the sunset reaches thow the Earth.
But when it's nearly morning the sunset rise up and becomes red and yellow. And i do agree with the other's because they gave a good excplanaition and it's a good answer, they really do know about that.
